What is a census tract?

A census tract is a code assigned to a geographic area by the United States Bureau of Census. Contiguous, relatively similar neighborhoods are grouped together to form census tracts. Census tract designations assist the Bureau of Census in gathering and analyzing data from the national census. Census tracts typically average between 2,000 to 4,000 households, although specific census tracts may be larger or smaller. A wealth of demographic information is available at a census tract level to assist marketers in targeting their efforts.

What is a FIPS code?

FIPS is an acronym for Federal Information Processing Standards. Each state and county in the United States is assigned a unique FIPS code by the Federal government. In a 5 digit FIPS code, the first two digits designate the state and the last 3 digits designate the specific county within the state.

What is an ASCII file?

ASCII is an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. ASCII is an international method of representing information on computers. ASCII files are a popular method for providing prospect listings in a computer readable format.

What is a SIC code?

SIC is an acronym for Standard Industrial Classification. Most industries are assigned a specific SIC code. For business-to-business marketers, targeting by SIC code is an effective way to pinpoint their target market.
